Merchant Center final identifiers
Open one affected item and record its final GTIN, brand, MPN, identifier_exists value, item ID, and variant attributes. Use the final attributes to see what Google actually received.
Missing value [gtin]
A missing GTIN is an identity check, not an instruction to put any number in Shopify's Barcode field. First determine whether the manufacturer assigned a GTIN to the exact product or variant. Some custom, handmade, vintage, or one-of-a-kind products legitimately have no assigned GTIN.

Google strongly recommends a legitimate GTIN when one is assigned because it helps match the product correctly. A missing identifier can limit visibility, but a guessed SKU, a sibling variant's barcode, or an invented number is worse than an accurate blank. The correct path depends on the real identifier status of the exact sellable item.
Keep the item ID, variant, target country, currency, and observation time aligned while troubleshooting.

Open the matching Shopify variant and inspect its Barcode, SKU, options, vendor, and publication state. Do not compare a parent product or a different size, color, or pack level.
Check packaging, manufacturer records, or another authoritative assignment record. Establish whether a GTIN exists for this exact variant before adding a value or changing identifier settings.
A made-up number can pass a simple length or check-digit test and still be unassigned or belong to another item. Never create a GTIN to silence the warning.
An internal SKU is not automatically a GTIN, and different variants commonly have different assigned identifiers. Use only the value for the exact sellable item.
The no-identifier path is for products that genuinely lack assigned identifiers. Do not set identifier_exists to false merely because the correct code has not been collected yet.
The browser checker recognizes common Merchant Center messages without connecting or storing account data.
Open error checkerNo. Some custom, handmade, vintage, or one-of-a-kind products have no assigned GTIN. Products that do have a manufacturer-assigned GTIN should use that accurate value.
Not unless the SKU is also the legitimate manufacturer-assigned GTIN for that exact item. Merchant-created SKUs and GTINs normally serve different purposes.
